Why do some children with AUTISM engage in HEAD BANGING?
Surpisingly around 20% of babies or toddlers engage in head banging purposefully(as per study). Boys being 3times more likely so show this behaviour compared to girls.
It can be due to
1. Sensory processing issues
2. To indicate pain or irritation
3. A way to seek attention
4. To express frustration
What parents can do about it ?
(Please consult your Occupational therapist for details)
1. Utilise your rocking chair or gym ball to give controlled vestibular input.
2. Use a helmet (as per proper prescription).
3. Utilise vibration or various vibratory toys.
4. Incorporate rotation in movement breaks.
5. Use weighted hat or halo or just a regular baseball cap to provide pressure input.
6. Utilise a tactile brush / scrubby brush / bathing brush with bristles around hair during transition.
7. Movement exercise against resistance ( like chin ups in chin up bar, doing household tasks and lifting heavy objects , or wheelbarrow walking) can help.
8. Consider padding certain areas if the hanging is frequent.
Hope the tips are going to help the concerned parents.
Please consult your therapist regularly if problem persists .
